BREAKING: Statement by Syria’s Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa:
The Israeli entity—which has always sought to destabilize us and sow discord among us since the fall of the former regime—is once again trying to turn our sacred land into an endless arena of chaos. Through this, it aims to fracture our people’s unity and weaken our ability to continue the path of reconstruction and national revival.
This entity never ceases in its use of every method to plant conflict and division—forgetting that Syrians, with their long history, have always rejected disunity and partition.
Possessing great power does not guarantee victory, just as success in one arena does not mean success in another. You may be able to start a war, but you cannot easily control its outcome. We are the children of this land—more capable than anyone of overcoming the Israeli entity’s attempts to tear us apart.
We, the sons of Syria, know well who seeks to drag us into war, who wants to divide us—and we will not give them the opportunity to trap our people in a conflict they wish to ignite on our soil. A war whose only aim is to fragment our homeland and scatter our efforts into chaos and destruction. Syria is not a testing ground for foreign conspiracies, nor a stage for others to realize their ambitions at the expense of our children and women.
I extend a special message to our Druze brethren, who are an integral part of this nation’s fabric: Syria will never be a land of partition or fragmentation or division between its sons. Protecting your rights and freedoms is a top priority for us. We reject any attempt to drag you into alignment with external actors or to sow division within our ranks. We are all partners in this land.
The Syrian state intervened with resolve and determination to stop the internal fighting that erupted in Sweida between armed groups from the province and neighboring areas, triggered by longstanding disputes. Instead of helping the state calm the situation, lawless groups known for their chaos and incitement emerged.
The state’s efforts succeeded in restoring stability and expelling the lawless factions despite Israeli interference. The Israeli entity responded by launching widespread attacks on civilian and government infrastructure to undermine these efforts, greatly complicating the situation and pushing matters toward a dangerous escalation.
We were faced with two choices: open war with the Israeli entity—at the cost of our Druze people’s safety and the stability of Syria and the region—or allowing Druze elders and religious leaders to return to reason and prioritize the national interest over those seeking to tarnish the honorable image of the mountain’s people.
We are not afraid of war—we have spent our lives facing challenges and defending our people. But we have prioritized the interests of Syrians over chaos and destruction. The best option at this stage was to take a precise decision to protect the unity of our homeland and the safety of its people, based on the supreme national interest.
We have decided to assign some local factions and Druze religious leaders the responsibility for maintaining security in Sweida. This decision stems from our deep understanding of the gravity of the situation and the risk it poses to our national unity. We aim to avoid dragging the country into a new wide-scale war that could derail Syria from its path of post-war recovery and burden it with additional political and economic hardship left behind by the former regime.
Finally, we are committed to holding accountable anyone who has harmed or wronged our Druze brethren. They are under the protection and responsibility of the state. Law and justice will safeguard everyone’s rights without exception. We reaffirm that preserving the country’s unity, stability, and the safety of our people—and ensuring a secure future for their children—is our highest priority.
