“We keep asking: is there a ceasefire, or just gunfire?” a displaced Palestinian man says, standing in the rubble left by an Israeli occupation airstrike on a residential building near the Yellow Line in Shuja’iyya, east of Gaza City. He says families were sitting near Omar Al-Mukhtar Street on Thursday night when the Israeli occupation army phoned a man in the area and ordered everyone to leave.
With nowhere to go, they grabbed their children and ran into the dark, leaving behind their tents, food and water. When they came back, the building had been flattened, and the rubble now blocks the paths to the tents where they and their neighbours live, about 20 metres from the line the Israeli occupation army keeps pushing deeper into Gaza. The strike was part of a wave of evacuation orders and bombings across Gaza City and Khan Younis that night, one year after a ceasefire that, he says, has never stopped the pounding. “We want to live,” he says. “We stand firm on our land.”
