“Praise God, Lord of all worlds,” a resident repeats again and again, standing before the wreckage left by an Israeli occupation airstrike on a residential building near the Yellow Line in Shuja’iyya, east of Gaza City. Families living in tents around the building were ordered out by phone on Thursday night and fled with their children into the dark, leaving their food, water and belongings behind. They returned to find the building flattened and the rubble blocking the way to what remained of their shelters, a short distance from the line the Israeli occupation army keeps pushing deeper into Gaza. Words of praise are all that is left to say over a home that has been bombed, abandoned and lost again, one year into a ceasefire that has never stopped the strikes.

The moment an Israeli occupation drone struck a home belonging to the Al-Sawafiri family near the Abdullah Azzam Mosque in Al-Sabra, southern Gaza City, on Thursday evening, killing Intisar Talal Abu Asr and a child, Hossam Abu Asr, and wounding around 10 others, several of them critically. The strike came shortly after the Israeli occupation army issued evacuation orders for Al-Sabra and other areas across the Strip, leaving residents almost no time to get out before the bombs fell, which is why so many of the wounded were still inside. A fire broke out at the site and spread to neighbouring homes as residents appealed for civil defence crews to reach them. The attack came on the 365th day of a ceasefire signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, which the Israeli occupation has violated every single day since.

After his release from Israel's torture camps, Majdi Al-Ayoubi recalled how an Israeli intelligence officer told him they had executed his six-month pregnant wife and his mother after raiding their home and kidnapping him during the invasion of the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City in May 2024.

Today, a year into the alleged ceasefire, an Israeli airstrike targeted Majdi's vehicle in Gaza's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, killing him, wiping out his entire family.

Despite the ceasefire in Gaza, the Israeli occupation army killed Ibrahim Muhammad Abu Khashan, 40, and wounded a child and two women in central Gaza on 9 October, according to Quds News Network, citing medical sources. Abu Khashan was shot in the neck east of al-Masdar, near Deir al-Balah, and his body was taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. The three others were wounded when Israeli occupation army vehicles opened fire toward al-Maghazi refugee camp. Quds also reported gunfire directed at Palestinian homes east of Deir al-Balah, al-Maghazi and al-Bureij, alongside artillery shelling.

“We keep asking: is there a ceasefire, or just gunfire?” a displaced Palestinian man says, standing in the rubble left by an Israeli occupation airstrike on a residential building near the Yellow Line in Shuja’iyya, east of Gaza City. He says families were sitting near Omar Al-Mukhtar Street on Thursday night when the Israeli occupation army phoned a man in the area and ordered everyone to leave.

With nowhere to go, they grabbed their children and ran into the dark, leaving behind their tents, food and water. When they came back, the building had been flattened, and the rubble now blocks the paths to the tents where they and their neighbours live, about 20 metres from the line the Israeli occupation army keeps pushing deeper into Gaza. The strike was part of a wave of evacuation orders and bombings across Gaza City and Khan Younis that night, one year after a ceasefire that, he says, has never stopped the pounding. “We want to live,” he says. “We stand firm on our land.”

Nearly two years ago, during an Israeli military incursion into Gaza’s Zeitoun neighbourhood, Israeli forces surrounded Palestinian detainee Majdi Al-Ayyoubi, his mother, and his wife, who was nine months pregnant.

While Majdi was being tortured during a so-called field interrogation, an Israeli officer ordered his mother and wife to walk north. Shortly afterwards, Israeli forces bombed them, killing both women and his unborn son. A Shin Bet officer then boasted to Majdi about their killing. They murdered his family and turned his grief into yet another instrument of torture.

I shared some of the darkest chapters of suffering with Majdi inside the Sde Teiman torture camp. We were held together in the section they called “Hell,” where he endured both the agony of his injuries and the unbearable loss of his family.

Majdi survived captivity and emerged from that graveyard of the living. Yet Israel would not let him live.

Just moments ago, Israeli forces killed Majdi in a strike on a vehicle in Gaza City. He has now joined his mother, his wife, and the son he never had the chance to hold in his arms.

Majdi carried his longing for that child until his very last breath.
