NEW: Netanyahu Acknowledges Goal of Gaza Assault Is Forced Removal: “They Have Nowhere to Return To”

Israeli outlet Maariv reports Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told lawmakers Sunday that Israel’s war on Gaza is intended to render large parts of the territory uninhabitable, forcing Palestinians to flee. His remarks marked one of the clearest admissions yet that mass displacement—not the return of Israeli captives—is the primary aim of the campaign.

▪️ “We are demolishing more and more homes; they have nowhere to return to,” Netanyahu said during a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting. “The only natural outcome will be a desire among Gazans to emigrate. Our main problem is finding countries willing to take them.”

➤ Netanyahu said humanitarian aid in Gaza would be conditioned on displaced Palestinians never returning to their homes, justifying this by claiming they came from areas “mixed with Hamas operatives.” This proposal—punishing civilians by permanently expelling them from their neighborhoods—directly contradicts past Israeli military statements, which said aid distribution would allow family representatives to collect food and supplies on behalf of the displaced and return to their homes.

➤ Netanyahu also signaled long-term control over Gaza’s future, stating: “The United States is showing interest in the territory of Gaza.” He added, “I know I’ll disappoint some people here, but we are not currently talking about Israeli settlement in the Gaza Strip.”

➤ Far-right Knesset member Limor Son Har-Melech of Otzma Yehudit responded by calling for American Jews to settle the land instead: “Bring in the Jews of the United States—then we’ll hit two birds with one stone.”

➤ The discussion follows Donald Trump’s February declaration that a U.S.-backed plan to remove Gaza’s population and “permanently” resettle them elsewhere would begin after the war. Trump named Egypt and Jordan as possible destinations, and also floated Indonesia.

➤ In March, Israel began advancing this plan, forming an office to coordinate logistics and international pressure. Foreign organizations have reportedly already assisted dozens of Palestinian families in fleeing to Europe and other countries.

➤ Maariv claimed the program has gained traction based on anecdotally cited polling saying half of Gaza’s population wants to emigrate—though no source, methodology, or date was provided.

⚡️JUST IN:

The ceasefire is now in effect since an hour now, and air operations have halted to allow for the safe release of prisoner Idan. It will end once he is freed, possibly lasting until 8 p.m., depending on field conditions.

UNICEF used the brief truce to deliver three trucks of medical supplies to northern Gaza. No aid has entered Gaza so far.

Israel is preparing a site in Re’im to receive soldier Idan Alexander.

The Red Cross will transfer him to the buffer zone and hand him over to the Israeli army. He’ll then go to Re’im base to meet his family before being flown to the hospital.

There will be no formal handover ceremony.

Palestinians risked their lives to retrieve bags of flour from homes in danger zones like al-Shujaiyah during a temporary truce meant for the release of one prisoner.

Despite the ceasefire, dozens were shot, injured, or killed by Israeli quadcopter drones still circling the area. Many rushed to salvage food, but only the lucky made it out alive.

Total Number of detainees in Israeli Occupation Prisons as of Early May 2025:

The number of prisoners and detainees in Israeli occupation prisons exceeds 10,100 as of early May 2025, including at least 400 children and 35 female prisoners.

The number of administrative detainees stands at 3,577.

The number of Gaza detainees classified by the Israeli prison administration as “unlawful combatants” and officially recognized as such is 1,846—noting that this figure does not include all Gaza detainees, particularly those held in military camps run by the Israeli army.

Prior to the genocidal war, the total number of prisoners in Israeli prisons was over 5,250, with 40 female prisoners, 170 children, and approximately 1,320 administrative detainees.

⚡️BREAKING: Hamas Statement:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Al-Qassam Brigades have just released the Zionist soldier holding American citizenship, Idan Alexander, following communications with the U.S. administration and as part of the efforts made by mediators to secure a ceasefire, reopen border crossings, and deliver aid and relief to our people in the Gaza Strip.

This step comes after important contacts during which the Hamas movement showed a high level of positivity and flexibility.

We affirm that serious and responsible negotiations can achieve results in securing the release of prisoners, while continued aggression only prolongs their suffering and may lead to their deaths.

We reaffirm the movement’s readiness to immediately begin negotiations to reach a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire agreement, ensure the withdrawal of the occupation army, lift the blockade, implement a prisoner exchange, and begin the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

We urge President Trump’s administration to continue its efforts to end this brutal war waged by the war criminal Netanyahu against children, women, and unarmed civilians in Gaza.
