Leave the Amish Alone — or Watch Them Leave New York
New York is preparing to do something a free country should find intolerable: grind a peaceful religious minority out of existence over a paperwork war it started, then act surprised when the minority packs the wagons and goes.
The state’s Amish — roughly 25,000 people in one-room schoolhouses on private land, taking no public money — have told Albany the quiet part out loud. Restore the religious exemption that existed for more than fifty years, or they will leave.
