Het huisvestingsdecreet van de regering voorziet in nieuwe maatregelen om het terugvorderen van woningen door eigenaren te beperken:
De regeling bepaalt dat, zodra de eerste vijf jaar van het huurcontract zijn verstreken — zeven jaar wanneer de verhuurder een bedrijf is —, verlengingen voortaan plaatsvinden voor nieuwe termijnen van vijf of zeven jaar.
Een eigenaar die de verhuur niet wil voortzetten, moet dit ten minste zes maanden van tevoren melden. Bovendien moet hij, indien hij de woning zonder gegronde reden wil terugvorderen, de huurder een vergoeding betalen ter hoogte van 12 maandelijkse huurtermijnen voor een woning met vergelijkbare kenmerken.
De verplichting tot het betalen van een vergoeding geldt niet wanneer de eigenaar kan aantonen dat hij de woning nodig heeft om deze als hoofdverblijfplaats voor zichzelf of voor naaste familieleden te gebruiken.
