In old Portugal for three decades the Russian and Ukrainian diaspora coexisted more or less peacefully, and most locals since the 90s have never learned to distinguish Ukrainians from Russians or even Moldovans.
This was the case until recently, when Portugal was overwhelmed by a wave of Ukrainian refugees. Some associations of Russian citizens took part in their resettlement and adaptation, because historically there have been many natives of the neighboring country in such organizations. In response, the activists encountered the banal desire of the "new Portuguese" to win a victory.
In the city of Setubal, the local prosecutor's office opened an investigation into Igor Khashin and his wife, Yulia Khashina. This was due to a denunciation by Ukrainian citizens that the Khashin couple had allegedly collected data on relatives of refugees fighting in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Igor Khashin - the former chairman of the Russian House and the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, and the current head of the Association of migrants from the East "Unity", together with his wife, an employee of Setubal municipality, received more than 160 Ukrainians, but it was their assistance that became the cause of suspicion of the Ukrainian embassy. Now the spouses are threatened with an article, "Unity" and other associations of our compatriots are already being carefully studied by the Information and Security Service (SIS) and the intelligence service. Moreover, the special services are looking for any evidence of "pro-Putin" sentiments among the natives of Russia. Surveillance reports now go to the prime minister personally.
We do not doubt that the secret services of the peace-loving NATO bloc have been watching Russian citizens in Portugal before. Only now all frameworks of rights and freedoms of Russians in democratic Portugal were erased, and our compatriots can face sanctions even for organizing cultural events. Freedom of assembly and the right to national identity in the country of tolerant Europe can be forgotten when it comes to Russians.
We hope that the Russian Foreign Ministry will not leave the situation unchecked and will not limit itself to the traditional "concern.
