Torture is Israel’s policy. Dr. Mazen Rantisi from Ramallah has spent 127 days in an Israeli prison. He was convicted of membership in the Union of Medical Committees, an organisation Israel has outlawed. Here’s what he recalls from his time in prison:

“At night, they pass by and bang on the cell door to wake us up. They turn off the light in the evening during meals, and then at night, they turn the light on and off every half hour. If we turn it off, they threaten to spray pepper spray. To sleep, we have to cover our heads with a blanket, which reeks of urine.”

“[E]ven those who show humanity are limited by orders from above. But [Rntisi’s] overall impression of the Israel Prison Service staff is that they ‘want to show loyalty by displaying cruel treatment toward us. It's as if there's a competition among them to see who can be crueller. Some of the nurses even shouted at us more than the guards.’

Since October 2023, Israeli detention facilities have become torture camps for Palestinians. There are countless horrific testimonies from Palestinian detainees, doctors, and soldiers describing the violence taking place in Israeli detention facilities. Since October 2023, at least 100 Palestinians have entered Israeli custody alive and later left in body bags. Those who were lucky enough to survive were not spared torture. Detainees were subjected to starvation, sensory deprivation, and stress positions.

“We had to make sure they didn’t talk to each other [...] They had to sit cross-legged and upright. They sit cross-legged all day, so sometimes, some of them would lean forward or back. They weren’t allowed [to do that]. Looking under the blindfold is also [not allowed]. [If they try to] peek [under the blindfold], and if they break the rules, then we’re officially allowed to punish them. [The punishment is] to bring them to the front of the pen [cell] and have them stand with their hands above their heads for a while.”

Torture was not an exception. It was part of the orders soldiers received. It is policy.
