The Washington Post reports that Israeli officials are privately asking the question their cheerleaders dare not ask in public: where does this war actually end?
A senior Israeli official, speaking to the Post, put it with unusual candour for a government that has spent decades avoiding accountability:
“In Israel, officials have started asking the question: where is the end of this war? Because Iran is not surrendering and there are no signs of its collapse. We do not see anyone who could replace the system of government in Iran and we doubt that arming the Kurds or other minorities would be a good strategy. The costs of the war are constantly rising and we fear an endless war. We are considering the possibility of ending the war and abandoning the goal of overthrowing the Iranian system.”
They broke the hornet’s nest with a hammer and now stand there bleeding, wondering why the hornets won’t die on schedule.
Ten days in. The Supreme Leader is dead and Iran just appointed his son Mojtaba Khamenei, the IRGC pledged allegiance before the body was cold, the strait of Hormuz is closed, eight American soldiers are in body bags (probably much higher), Iranian missiles are de-militarizing American and Israeli assets from Tel Aviv across the Gulf monarchs, and Tehran has just said it is prepared for a long war. There is no way for Israel or Trump to climb down from this without exposing how weak they are and this ending in humiliation.
So... how’s that regime change going, gentlemen?
