JUST IN:
Israel has begun withdrawing from Gaza to the “yellow line,” after which it will control about 53% of the Strip until a second phase of the deal is reached on Hamas disarmament, international forces, and Gaza’s governance.
A ceasefire is in effect but won’t be fully enforced until the withdrawal is complete, so residents cannot return yet.
Within 72 hours after the withdrawal (expected in 24 hours), Israel and Hamas will begin the exchange process releasing Israeli captives and bodies, followed by 1,700 Palestinian prisoners from Gaza, 250 serving life terms (including Ayyham Kamamji), and the bodies of 360 fighters.
The withdrawal map was revised from 58% to 53% Israeli control, which will remain until the next phase begins.
Israeli media, including Kan, report that the Israeli army has started pulling back from several areas, while tanks continue firing along Al-Rashid Street. Heavy equipment and trucks moved in and out of Gaza throughout the day, and the withdrawal is expected to be completed within 24 hours.
