Dat zeggen economen en analisten naar aanleiding van waarschuwingen van De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) en de Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) over historisch hoge beurswaarderingen voor techbedrijven in de Verenigde Staten. „Ik ben het eens met de diagnose dat die aandelen in Amerika duidelijke tekenen van overwaardering vertonen. Maar moet ik dan alles verkopen? Als iedereen dat doet, dan is dat juist een trigger voor een forse correctie”, zegt Lex Hoogduin, oud-directeur van DNB.
- De Nederlandsche Bank en AFM waarschuwen voor historisch hoge beurswaarderingen van Amerikaanse techbedrijven.
- Economen zien gelijkenissen met de dotcom-crisis, waarbij overwaardering leidde tot forse koersdalingen.

Harald Benink, hoogleraar Banking and Finance aan de Tilburg University, ziet dit dilemma voor beleggers ook: „Dit is waarschijnlijk een bubbel. Maar je hebt rationale bubbels en irrationele bubbels. Bij een rationele bubbel weet je als belegger dat de beursfondsen overgewaardeerd zijn. Maar omdat je verwacht dat de bubbel nog groter gaat worden, is het rationeel om als belegger nog even in die markt te blijven. Maar dit pakt alleen maar goed uit als je de omslag goed kunt inschatten.”
AFM waarschuwt voor oververhitting financiële markten: ’We maken ons echt zorgen’
Er zijn steeds meer zorgen over de hoge beursnoteringen van de zogeheten Magnificent Seven, de zeven grote Amerikaanse techbedrijven Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Meta Platforms (Facebook), Tesla en Nvidia. Het zijn stuk voor stuk beurslievelingen. Maar toezichthouders waarschuwen steeds vaker dat de investeringen van honderden miljarden in AI van deze bedrijven wellicht minder rendement opleveren dan beleggers nu hopen.
Tussen begin januari 2023 en eind oktober 2025 is de Nasdaq, de techbeurs waar al deze bedrijven genoteerd zijn, met ruim 125 procent gestegen. De laatste dagen zijn beleggers wat zenuwachtiger aan het worden en zakken de koersen licht in.
Dotcom-crisis
De huidige situatie doet Hoogduin en Benink denken aan de dotcom-crisis. Begin 2000 barste de internetzeepbel omdat verwachtingen rond hoge internetinvesteringen veel te hoog waren opgelopen. „Ik zie gelijkenissen”, zegt Hoogduin. „Ook toen was er behoorlijke overwaardering. Dat was grotendeels niet gefinancierd met krediet.” De Nasdaq verloor vanaf voorjaar 2000 in twee jaar ruim 75 procent van zijn waarde, de AEX daalde toen in drie jaar met ruim 60 procent.

Tot nu toe financierden de meeste techbedrijven hun investeringen met eigen geld. De laatste weken kondigen ze ook aan obligaties uit te geven om hun plannen mee te bekostigen. Hoogduin: „Bedrijven in de AI-hoek beginnen nu ook leningen op te nemen. Als dat doorgaat, dan kunnen de koersen verder worden opgeblazen. Maar als het fout gaat, zijn de risico’s groter.”
Overdreven optimisme
Benink vreest voor de stabiliteit van het financiële stelsel. „Sinds de kredietcrisis zijn de schulden alleen maar verder opgelopen. Zowel bij overheden als bij private partijen.” Hij denkt dat het knappen van de AI-zeepbel een trigger zou kunnen zijn voor een bredere financiële crisis. „Maar je weet dat nooit zeker. Wat een omslag in gang zet, wordt bepaald door het aandeel beleggers dat er geen vertrouwen meer in heeft. Dat hoeft niet de meerderheid te zijn.”
„Het is goed dat DNB dit risico benoemt”, zegt Corné van Zeijl, beleggingsstrateeg bij vermogensbeheerder Cardano. „Het doet mij denken aan de waarschuwing van toenmalig centraal bankier Alan Greenspan voor ’overdreven optimisme’. Hij deed zijn uitspraken in december 1996. Hij kreeg gelijk, maar wel pas vier jaar later.”
