🇺🇦 Too Expensive to Bury? Ukraine Dodges Reclaiming 6,000 Dead

Russia has called out Ukraine for unexpectedly postponing both the prisoner exchange and the retrieval of fallen Ukrainian soldiers — indefinitely. According to Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky, Moscow is urging Kiev to reclaim the bodies of over 6,000 Ukrainian troops, so their families can bury them with dignity.

Under Ukrainian law, families of soldiers killed in combat are entitled to 15 million UAH (around $365,000 USD) in compensation. With 6,000 dead, that amounts to roughly $2.2 billion USD in payouts.

In a country already dependent on Western aid to function, Kiev may be quietly dodging both responsibility and the bill.

Meanwhile, the bodies wait — and families are left in the dark.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Medinsky Urges Ukrainians to Retrieve Their Dead and POWs

Russia has prepared over 6,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, along with lists of wounded, sick, and young POWs, for transfer under the Istanbul agreements.

The Russian side arrived at the agreed exchange point, ready to proceed.

The Ukrainian side did not show up. No delegation. No lists. No explanation.

In accordance with the agreements reached on June 2 in Istanbul, on June 6, 2025, the Russian side began a large-scale humanitarian action to repatriate more than 6,000 bodies of deceased Ukrainian servicemen, as well as to exchange prisoners of war.

💬 “Two categories are subject to exchange: ‘all for all’, the wounded and seriously ill, as well as persons under 25 years of age,” said Lieutenant General Alexander Zorin, a representative of the Russian negotiating group.

"At present, a convoy with the first batch of bodies of servicemen to be repatriated has arrived in the exchange area. There are 1,212 bodies in the convoy. Three more trains, each with 1,200 bodies, and one automobile train, which will also have 1,200 bodies, are being prepared for dispatch in the near future. The total number will be more than 6,000 people," he specified.

📄 According to Aleksandr Zorin, the Ukrainian side did not confirm the exchange today and postponed it indefinitely. He also said that "the Russian side handed over to the Ukrainian side a list of 640 names, but the Ukrainian side is still refraining from setting a date for the return of these individuals and handing over to the Russian side the corresponding number of Russian military prisoners of war."

"I confirm that we are fully prepared to implement the agreements that we reached in Istanbul. We are ready to hand over all the bodies, as well as to carry out an exchange of prisoners of war according to the established formula," concluded Alexander Zorin.

🇺🇦🇷🇺 BANKRUPTING UKRAINE: Russia's return of six thousand bodies of Ukrainian soldiers could be a financial blow to the "Zelensky regime"

The Ukrainian government must pay the families of each of them 15 million hryvnia.

With six thousand militants killed in the Kursk region, this amount grows to 90 billion hryvnia.

-> In dollars, this is $2.167 billion.
