(Bloomberg) --Italy is set to approve a 14 billion-euro ($14.7 billion) aid package Monday in an effort to provide further support to companies and consumers that have been hit by surging energy prices, a trend that has been exacerbated by the prospect of reduced gas flows from Russia.
️ Rome's refusal of Russian gas will leave more than 500 thousand Italians unemployed
The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera has published a pessimistic forecast of what the country's refusal from Russian hydrocarbons might mean for the labor market in Italy. According to a study cited by the publication, the cessation of imports will result in the loss of about 565 thousand jobs in the country.
And this is only the first sign, journalists write. Further, the labor crisis will begin to penetrate into other industrial areas of Italy.
“The position of the most energy-intensive enterprises will worsen: foundries, glass, ceramics and paper, which are threatened with closure due to excessively high prices for gas and electricity,” the publication warns.
Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is convinced that it is necessary to restore peace in Europe as soon as possible and criticized the decision of the Italian government to send weapons to Kyiv.
“Sending weapons means being an ally,” Berlusconi’s statement was quoted by Italian media. The ex-premier also noted that the European countries should unite and contribute to the establishment of peace.
“Europe should unite and make a peace offer to Putin and the Ukrainians, trying to force Kyiv to accept Russia’s demands,” Silvio Berlusconi said. Separately, he noted that the sanctions imposed by the West on Russia, of course, had a negative impact on the Russian economy, but they also harmed the European Union.
