The stepped-up preparations follow multiple upgrades to Israel’s F-35 fighter jet and a massive round of air drills

The Israeli Air Force has developed the ability to fly bombing raids into Iran without the need for midair refueling, the Jerusalem Post reported, noting that the military updated its options against the Islamic Republic after recent improvements to Israel’s F-35 stealth jet and the fielding of new one-ton bomb.

While the US-made plane previously required refueling in order to reach Iran – meaning a stop at a friendly air base or a link-up with an airborne tanker – the military has overcome that obstacle, according to the Post.

The outlet offered few details on the reported upgrade, which comes on the heels of a large-scale Israeli military exercise over the Mediterranean, simulating “long-range” strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Practicing newly developed attack options, the drills involved more than 100 aircraft, covered some 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) and were carried out over several weeks.

Israel’s F-35 was also recently outfitted with a new one-ton bomb developed by Rafael Advanced Weapons Systems, the Post said, adding that the munition is protected against jamming and fits inside the jet’s internal weapons compartment, retaining its stealth profile.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel’s strategy toward the Islamic Republic had changed over the last year, noting that the military now plans to strike Iran’s “head” rather than “just its arms” in the event of a conflict. Bennett and his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu have repeatedly railed against Tehran’s nuclear program over the years, insisting the country intends to develop nuclear weapons despite numerous denials from Iranian officials.

Iran says it’s capable of building nuclear bomb

No decision to produce one, however, has been made, a senior Iranian official has said

Iran is technically capable of producing a nuclear bomb but no political decision on such an option has been made, Kamal Kharrazi, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has said.
“In a few days we were able to enrich uranium up to 60% and we can easily produce 90% enriched uranium,” Kharrazi told Al Jazeera on Sunday.
Iran has the technical means to produce a nuclear bomb but there has been no decision by Iran to build it.
The bombshell revelation comes shortly after US President Joe Biden pledged Washington will do everything to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weaponry. The pledge was made during Biden’s visit to Israel earlier this week, when the US president and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signed a joint declaration on the continued strategic partnership between the two countries. Among other things, Washington pledged “never to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon,” confirming it “is prepared to use all elements of its national power to ensure that outcome,”according to the declaration.

While Iran has long-maintained it had never sought to develop nuclear weaponry, the country has ramped up its nuclear activities over the past few years. Gradual expansion of the nuclear program followed the 2018 move by then-US President Donald Trump to unilaterally withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Since then, the landmark agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has effectively fallen apart, with Washington re-imposing old sanctions and slapping new ones on Tehran. Iran, in turn, gradually suspended its obligations under JCPOA, installing new uranium-enriching equipment and boosting output of the radioactive material.

Efforts to revive the deal have yielded no result so far, with the US and Iran repeatedly trading blame for lack of progress. Tehran maintains it is Washington’s responsibility to return to the original agreement and lift sanctions in full, while US officials have claimed that Iran has been raising new demands during JCPOA talks.

The Iranian navy will take part in joint exercises with Russian and Chinese warships “this autumn,” Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri announced on Thursday in Tehran.

The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces did not offer much in the way of details about the planned maneuvers, but said other countries such as Oman and Pakistan might participate as well.
Bagheri made the announcement on the sidelines of a military parade in Tehran marking Sacred Defense Week, according to the Mehr news agency.

“Exercises involving the navies of Iran, Russia and China will be held in the northern part of the Indian Ocean this autumn,” Mehr quoted Bagheri as saying.
This would be the fourth joint exercise by the three navies since 2019, and the first since the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine. Eleven Iranian vessels, three Russian and two Chinese warships took part in the January 2022 exercises in the northern Indian Ocean. Among the activities practiced at the time were artillery fire on naval targets, search-and-rescue operations, and the liberation of a civilian ship from pirates, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Interessante ontwikkelingen in Iran. De woede van de demonstranten lijkt oprecht en deels organisch te zijn ontstaan. Wel apart dat dit samenvalt met de oorlog in Oekraïne. Iran steunt Rusland en beschermt Armenië tegen Azerbeidzjan.

Armed separatists killed 19 people, including several members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), at a police station in Zahedan in southeastern Iran on Friday, state media reported. At least 32 members of the IRGC were also injured in the attack, including members of the Basij volunteer forces.

IRGC Colonel Hamidreza Hashimi, IRGC soldier Mohammad Amin Azarshokr, and Basij soldiers Mohamad Amin Arefi and Saeed Borhan Rigi were among those killed at the scene, according to IRNA news agency. Intelligence chief Seyyed Ali Mousavi was also reportedly shot during the attack, later dying of his wounds.

The gunmen allegedly hid themselves among worshipers inside a mosque near the station before attacking, IRNA reported. Social media postings mention multiple police stations in Zahedan being seized by Baluchi “protesters” on Friday, though state media reports do not name the separatist group involved in the deadly assault. Tasnim news agency reported that Iranian security forces had thwarted another “terrorist” attack on a Zahedan police station on Friday.

It was not clear if the attacks were connected to the ongoing protests in the country over the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman accused of wearing her hijab improperly, in police custody.

While police insisted Amini died of a heart attack, others claim she was beaten to death, and opposition groups within Iran have leveraged the resulting unrest to call for regime change. Amini’s Kurdish background has made her death a cause celebre for ethnic separatist movements, and Friday’s attack took place in Sistan and Baluchistan province, where ethnic Baluchi separatists have previously attacked Iranian security forces.

At least 41 protesters and police have been killed since protests over Amini’s death began last month, according to Iranian state TV.

Iran’s intelligence ministry has arrested nine foreigners connected to the protests, including French, German, Dutch, Italian, Swedish, and Polish citizens. The government has blamed “hostile foreign entities” for the unrest. US-backed media and influencers were among the first to claim Amini had been beaten, though CCTV footage from the police station where the beating allegedly occurred only shows the 22-year-old arguing with an officer and then walking away before falling to the floor. The US, which overthrew Iran’s secular democratically elected government in 1953, has openly sought regime change in Tehran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
