Bevel om het enige bewijs te vernietigen dat zou bevestigen dat de regering de rechterhand van Nicolás Maduro toestond om in Barajas te verblijven, en dat de koffers van eigenaar wisselden.
Het incident draait om de korte tussenlanding die de vicepresident van Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, maakte op de luchthaven Madrid-Barajas, ondanks het feit dat haar de toegang tot het Schengengebied van de Europese Unie was verboden.
José Luis Ábalos, toenmalig minister van Transport, ontmoette Rodríguez in een protocollaire zone van de luchthaven. Ábalos heeft herhaaldelijk het bestaan van 40 koffers met geld en goud ontkend.
Op dit moment, 4 januari 2026, zit José Luis Ábalos in voorlopige hechtenis. Hij wordt door het Openbaar Ministerie voor corruptiebestrijding veroordeeld tot een gevangenisstraf van maximaal 24 jaar voor misdrijven zoals criminele organisatie, omkoping, beïnvloeding en verduistering, in het kader van het onderzoek naar de vermeende ontvangst van illegale commissies bij overheidscontracten.
Links de hoofdcommissaris van politie van de Canarische Eilanden, Jesús María Gómez Martín, onlangs benoemd door de PSOE.
Hij werd gepromoveerd na het schandaal rond de koffers van Delcy en Ábalos (waarbij hij die nacht verantwoordelijk was voor de grenspost van de luchthaven Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas).
