Reporter asking German Chancellor: You (Germany) have been supporting Israel. Over 60,000 people, including 20,000 children, have been killed in Gaza. Is this support because of Germany’s Nazi past? Don’t you fear history will judge you for backing the wrong side again?

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz:

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan:

“They’re bombing Gaza this is genocide, a campaign to discipline people through mass killing.

By targeting Gaza, they have been trying to subdue it through genocide openly. And this still continues.

Our Red Crescent cannot deliver food aid there.

So far, we have tried to deliver over 100,000 tons of aid, but it is not enough. Continued aid is essential.

Mijn inschatting:

Erdogan spreekt deels vanuit het hart en deels vanuit het hoofd.

Hij is m.i. oprecht begaan met het lot van de Palestijnen. Maar hij is ook de leider van een NAVO-lidstaat. Erdogan moet het midden bewandelen tussen het pro-Palestijnse sentiment van de Turkse bevolking en het pro-Israel sentiment van het westen.

Let wel, dit is mijn inschatting. Hij kan ook een aalgladde, hypocriete politicus zijn. Ik kan vanaf deze stoel niet in zijn hart en hoofd kijken.
