The Bovaerpoisen that cows are forced to eat contains:
3-Nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP).
It has toxic properties: Harmful if inhaled or ingested, causes skin/eye irritation, may cause respiratory problems. The toxicity mechanism involves direct tissue irritation; it is also suspected (but not confirmed at low doses) of having reproductive effects, such as affecting fertility.
NOPA (3-nitrooxypropionic acid), the residual waste from Bovaerpoisen that passes into milk and meat, has not been studied in long-term studies involving human consumption. However, NOPA (3-nitrooxypropionic acid), a metabolite of Bovaer's active ingredient 3-NOP, has shown toxic effects in studies on rats, including testicular effects and fertility risks.
Calves that have consumed milk from cows that have ingested the Bovaerpoisen become ill, lose their appetite, lie sick, cannot stand up, and develop bloody diarrhea. Some die, others must be euthanized.
Of the farmers who responded to Seges' survey (Danish cattle advisory service) approximately 63 percent reported sick and/or dead cows.
