Ireland's President Catherine Connolly used a face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump in Dublin to tell the US president that "the normalization of war and genocide can never be accepted," conveying what she called the strong view of the Irish people.
Connolly, a left-wing independent long critical of Trump and an outspoken opponent of Israel's genocide in Gaza, has previously called him "volatile" and "acting like a bully," and has drawn on Ireland's own history of a man-made famine to condemn the starvation of Gaza, saying, "We keep talking about the consequences of tariffs, but never the consequences of genocide."
She reminded Trump of Ireland's constitutional commitment to the peaceful resolution of international disputes, and said the Irish people would stand with those who build peace in the places suffering "horrific war and violence."
