JUST IN: Big Tech is handing data over to ICE - Google handed a British student’s bank and credit card data to ICE.Amandla Thomas-Johnson, a UK journalist and Cornell graduate student, briefly attended a pro-Palestine protest in 2024.
ICE subpoenaed Google for his financial records, addresses, phone numbers, and account data. He was not given a chance to challenge it before Google complied.
By the time the request was executed, he had already left the U.S. for Switzerland.
At the same time, Google, Meta, and Reddit confirmed they have complied with DHS administrative subpoenas targeting users over anti-ICE posts, in some cases without a judge’s sign-off.
Civil liberties groups warn this expands federal surveillance and chills political speech.
The case adds to growing scrutiny over coordination between Big Tech platforms and U.S. immigration authorities.
