Dit klopt volgens mij niet helemaal.

60% van de invoer is zware petroleum daar de US raffinaderijen enkel dit soort verwerken. Voordat de US aan fracking deed hadden ze nog niet zoveel lichte petroleum en dus zijn die ouderwetse raffinaderijen voorzien op zware.

De VS moet nog steeds ruwe olie importeren. Ze produceren ongeveer 13,4 – 13,6 miljoen vaten per dag, maar de raffinaderijen moeten ongeveer 16,5 miljoen vaten verwerken om op volle capaciteit te draaien. Dat „tekort” van +/- 3 miljoen vaten wordt aangevuld met import.
Als we ruwe olie + vloeibaar aardgas + biobrandstoffen bij elkaar optellen, bedraagt de totale productie van de VS ongeveer 22,8 miljoen vaten, wat hoger is dan het binnenlandse verbruik van 20,4 miljoen vaten. Daarom produceert de VS technisch gezien al meer totale olie dan het verbruikt.

Waarom dan invoer :
1/ om die ouderwetse raffinaderijen te laten draaienç
2/ kostenbesparend : het is goedkoper om te importeren dan de eigen ruwe olie per boot naar hun locatie te vervoeren. Pijpleidingen naar sommige streken zijn niet doenbaar wegens enorme kosten en/of geografie / ecologische weerstand / vervoer per eigen boot is ook kostelijk daar die eigen boten gemaakt dienen te zijn in de US, eigendom moeten zijn van een US company, US bemanning moet hebben en onder US vlag moet varen.
