Frank Turek And Talmud Tatum DEFAME Chief Long, Blaming Him For Charlie's DEATH — Despite An Independent Report BLAMING Turning Point.
Frank Turek told Brandon Tatum that Utah Valley University Police Chief Jeff Long shook his hand in March, said he had been thrown under the bus, and then walked back a text that Dan Flood showed Turek. The text, in Turek's telling, was a request for somebody on the roof and a reply that Long had it covered. Turek treated that as proof the chief had promised a sniper watch on every building around the courtyard. That is not what the messages were about, and it is not what the after-action report found.
Long and Flood were talking about the walkway behind Charlie, the bridge overhead, because they did not want people throwing things down on him. Long said that to Turek in the room. The report says the outdoor fountain courtyard was Turning Point's choice after the university pushed back on safety. Turning Point handled the ticketing from Phoenix and did not give campus police a real headcount from tickets sold. The application said there would be no controversial speakers and that about 200 people were expected, later raised to 600. Thousands showed up. That is why the campus detail was six to eight officers, not because Long decided a crowd that size needed a skeleton crew. Turning Point also missed at least three meetings with the chief, including the one the morning of the event.
A university police chief does not control a private security plan he was never given. Brian Harpole's team had the man. Turning Point had the tickets, the site, and the meetings it skipped. Blaming Jeff Long for that, after the report already laid the planning failures at Turning Point's door, is a smear of a man who did what his texts said he would do.
