En in het onderzoek staat vermeld dat NIET de mug, maar wel de parasiet, gemodificieerd is. via CRISPR-technologie de malariaparasiet (die door de muggen werd gedragen) genetisch verzwakt. De parasiet kon de mens hierdoor niet meer ziek maken, maar zorgde er wel voor dat het menselijk lichaam antistoffen aanmaakte. Dr. Sean Murphy, de hoofdonderzoeker van de studie , gebruikte in het interview de metafoor: "We gebruiken de muggen alsof het 1.000 kleine vliegende spuiten zijn". Dit was puur om uit te leggen hoe de verzwakte parasiet in een gecontroleerde testomgeving effectief onder de huid van de proefpersonen werd gebracht.


Wanneer wetenschappers wél genetisch gemodificeerde muggen in de natuur loslaten (zoals in Florida, Brazilië of delen van Afrika), heeft dat een heel ander doel: het bestrijden van de muggenpopulatie :

Mannelijke muggen drinken alleen plantensap; ze kunnen dus geen ziektes (of vaccins) overdragen.
Deze mannetjes dragen een specifiek 'zelfbeperkend' gen met zich mee.
Wanneer ze worden vrijgelaten in het wild, paren ze met wilde (bijtende) vrouwtjes.
Dit gen zorgt ervoor dat de vrouwelijke nakomelingen sterven voordat ze volwassen worden. Omdat de vrouwtjes sterven, stort de lokale populatie die ziektes overbrengt binnen korte tijd in.
