Het onderzoek naar de beschuldigingen van corruptie loopt al twee jaar. Begoña Gómez, sinds 2006 getrouwd met Pedro Sánchez, zou overheidsopdrachten en overheidssteun hebben geregeld voor haar sponsors toen ze in het verleden werkte voor een stichting die mensen in Afrika helpt een onderneming op te zetten.

Positie misbruikt​

De 55-jarige Gómez wordt ervan verdacht haar positie als first lady te hebben misbruikt. Dat zou ze onder andere hebben gedaan toen luchtvaartmaatschappij Air Europa, een belangrijke geldschieter van haar stichting, op de rand van een faillissement stond.

De luchtvaartmaatschappij kreeg honderden miljoenen euro's staatssteun en dat ging niet via een aanvraagprocedure die andere bedrijven moesten doorlopen.

De Spaanse rechter Juan Carlos Peinado maakte gisteren bekend Gómez nu daadwerkelijk te vervolgen. Ook besloot hij dat de premiersvrouw het land niet uit mag. De Spaanse krant El País noemt dit 'de controversieelste beslissingen uit zijn carrière'. Het is volgens de krant nog nooit eerder gebeurd dat een first lady haar paspoort werd ingenomen.

Vluchtgevaarlijk​

Volgens rechter Peinado is er een risico dat de premiersvrouw 'aan justitie zal proberen te ontkomen'. Hij stelt ook dat haar persoonsbeveiligers mee zouden kunnen werken aan een ontsnapping. Gómez moet zich twee keer per maand bij de rechtbank melden.

Ondanks dit conflict heeft Washington ervoor gekozen te investeren in dezelfde basis die het niet kon gebruiken toen het die nodig had. De infrastructuur van Morón is van cruciaal belang voor het uitoefenen van luchtmacht boven de Middellandse Zee, Afrika en het Midden-Oosten, en het zou meer kosten om deze te laten vervallen dan welk eenmalig politiek meningsverschil dan ook.

Het geld dat er nu in wordt gestoken, koopt geen toekomstige gehoorzaamheid: het koopt beton, start- en landingsbanen en hangars op grond die nog steeds Spaans is.
